Tobacco rattle virus
(TRV)
Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) is of Tobravirus genus (figure 1). Several species of nematodes belonging to Trichodorus spp. and Paratrichodorus spp. genera transmit the virus. Transmission by seed is possible but only in a few weeds.
- Symptoms
The leaves are curved, spoon-shaped, with spots, necrotic rings and patterns, occasionally quite similar to the symptoms caused by TRSV. Leaf tissues have a brittle texture and emit a dry sound when touched. Systemic necrotic lesions are visible on the stem and leaves.
- Characteristics
This virus is widely spread on several continents. It is causes damage to potato crops and ornamentals (tulip, narcissus, gladiolus ...), but it also affects other cultivated or non-cultivated plants. Vector nematodes remain infectious for several months or years. Virus control consists of managing its vectors. We recommend application of some control measures advised in the Protection Methods of Pratylenchus.
