Tobacco vein banding mosaic virus

(TVBMV)

Tobacco vein banding mosaic virus (TVBMV) belongs to the Potyviridae family and to Potyvirus genus (figure 1). Several species of aphids transmit the virus in a non-persistent manner.

- Symptoms

Many bands of dark green tissue are observed along the veins (vein banding) (figure 2), small white to brown spots can also be observed on the upper leaf surface of younger leaves, they are quite similar to those caused by "weather fleck"  (figure 3).

- Characteristics

This virus occurs mainly in Taiwan and Japan. It has been observed in the United States in 1990, in Tennessee. Recommended  control methods of viruses transmitted by aphids are to some extent applicable. See the Protection Methods of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV).
