Peanut stunt virus (PSV)
Peanut stunt virus (PSV) belongs to Bromoviridae family, and the Cucumovirus genus (figure 1). Various aphid species transmit this virus in a non-persistant manner.
- Symptoms
The symptoms vary according to the tobacco type (figure 2.) and they can be:
- either large chlorotic patches on young leaves with yellowing and chlorotic rings on older leaves;
- or mosaic-like symptoms, similar to those induced by TMV or CMV, with ring shaped spots.
- Characteristics
This virus seems to occur mostly in Japan and the United States. It affects various cultivated hosts and weeds. Its incidence is low on tobacco. Control methods recommended against aphid-transmitted viruses are to some extent applicable. See the Protection Methods of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV).
