Description of the fungus
- The imperfect form of Pilidiella diplodiella produces pycnidia subglobular (100-200 µm in diameter) on injured tissue (Figures 1, 2 and 7). These have a central ostiole and gradually turn brown (Figure 3).
- The interior of each pycnidia is lined with numerous conidiophores hyaline (figure 4) at the end of which form conidia smooth, unicellular and initially hyaline (figures 5 to 8). Elliptical to ovoid in shape (8-16 x 5-7 µm), these mix over time (Figures 9 and 10).
