Methods of protection

Regarding the control of Botryosphaeriaceae diseases attacking the herbaceous organs of the vine and grape berries, we advise you to consult the protection methods detailed in the sheet black rot .
On the other hand, be aware that the Botryosphaeriaceae responsible for cankers on vines are extremely difficult to control. To date, there is no very efficient control method. The parasitic processes of these fungi showing analogies with those of other wood diseases (and are often associated with these pathologies), we advise you to consult the methods of protection proposed for eutypiosis and esca .

Among the proposed control methods, the following should be noted:

  • Ensure optimal production conditions for the vines: in nurseries, during planting, and during production;
  • In the nursery, put in place all prophylactic hygiene measures to limit plant contamination as much as possible;
  • in the vineyard, prune and eliminate all the portions of the twigs and trunks showing lesions in the wood, at least 10 cm below the vascular symptoms, and the dark bands. The vine will need to be reformed.
  • Eliminate and destroy all parts of diseased vines in order to avoid retaining a potential inoculum in the plant environment.
  • The protection of pruning wounds with fungicides or biopesticides has been studied with varying degrees of success depending on the production areas and the Botryosphaeriaceae species to be controlled. No conventional or alternative product can currently be offered in France to limit the development of these fungi in pruning wounds.

The fight against Botryosphaeriaceae on crops should evolve in the coming years thanks to the new knowledge available on these fungi, and in particular that relating to the species prevalent in the vineyard, and their biological characteristics in particular. What will happen to the vine?
