Golden dots
( golden speck )

Among the non-parasitic causes causing anomalies in the external coloring of the fruits, it is possible to observe golden spots , the main characteristics of which are discussed in terms:
- the symptoms they cause;
- origin of these anomalies;
- practices to be adopted in order to remedy them.

  • Symptoms on fruits
Presence of very numerous and tiny yellowish alterations, concentrated mainly in the stalk zone of the fruits (figures 1 and 2). These micro-lesions give the fruits a dull appearance and reduce their shelf life.
  • Origin of damage
Non-parasitic disease

Formation of calcium oxalate crystals in tissues, correlating with high calcium concentration in fruits.

All the parameters influencing the migration of calcium in the fruits can be implicated, in particular:
- the climate, with high humidity during the day and at night, with or without low radiation and excessively low temperatures;
- ferti-irrigation providing too much calcium, phosphates or nitrates or not enough potassium or chlorine.

Very vigorous plants would be more sensitive to this physiological condition.

  • How to cure it
Ensure maximum comfort to the plants during the flowering period of the first bouquets of early crops.

The plant and its behavior

- Cultivate less sensitive varieties

- Perform regular leaf stripping

The climate

- Ensure optimal humidity in the shelters, so as to promote plant transpiration (mulching, implementation of dehumidification in case of excess)
- Avoid keeping night temperature setpoints too low

Ferti-irrigation

- Use high conductivities and maintain high levels of magnesium and low in phosphates

- Avoid watering too early in the morning and too late in the afternoon
