Protection methods

The fight against this Rhizobium radiobacter (Agrobacterium tumefasciens) on tomato is not a major issue because it is infrequent and does not cause considerable damage in France or in many countries. In many situations, it will still be necessary to implement some hygiene measures to try to eliminate it from the farm.

  • During cultivation
When tumors are found on plants, it is unfortunately too late to intervene. No product, no measure , can effectively control this bacteriosis.

In soilless culture, if a few plants are affected in a limited number of bags, it is desirable to remove them from the culture and destroy them . Care will be taken not to leave plant debris and particles of substrate in place. At the end of cultivation, all the plants, and in particular their root system, will be removed from the plot and destroyed, in the open field or under shelter. In soilless culture, the substrates will be eliminated. A complete cleaning of the greenhouse and the equipment used in it will be carried out according to the same procedures as those taken to eliminate Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis from shelters.

  • Next crop
If the attacks took place in the open field, a rotation should be carried out for several years with monocots, cereals such as wheat or corn.

In cultivation under shelters, care should be taken not to allow the tomato to coexist in the same farm with ornamental, family or marketed species which could harbor this bacterium.

* Chemical control : As the number of pesticides available for a given use is constantly changing, we advise you to always confirm your choice by consulting the e-phy site of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries which is an online catalog of plant protection products and their uses, fertilizers and growing media approved in France. This also applies to all biological products based on microorganisms or natural substances.
