  • During cultivation

When symptoms of Pseudomonas corrugata are observed in a tomato plot, it is unfortunately too late to intervene. There are no effective measures to prevent the progression of this disease.

Despite this and knowing the biology of P. corrugata , a number of measures must be taken. We also advise you to consult the fact sheet on Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis : many of the control methods recommended therein can be used to control black marrow.

It is above all necessary to control the fertilization of plants in order to limit their vigor: reduction of nitrogen inputs, increase of potassium manure, etc.

The shelters will be ventilated and / or heated in order to prevent high humidity by all means, in particular the presence of water on the plants. In addition, irrigations will be limited if they were excessive before.
It is desirable to work in crops when the plants are dry, especially if one plans to remove the leaves from the lower part of the stem at a time conducive to this bacterial blight.

During or at the end of cultivation, plants badly affected or dead will be eliminated . Avoid burying plant debris in the ground.

Finally, we must not forget that this disease is reversible : plants more or less affected and blocked in their growth can restart and ensure very satisfactory growth and production as soon as the conditions become more lenient for the plants (heat and light). .

  • Next crop

This bacteriosis, which is not expressed systematically every year in the affected farms and depends on the climatic conditions of the moment and the state of its host, does not require special measures when setting up the next crop. It will still be necessary to ensure production conditions which do not induce plants that are too vulnerable and ensure an unfavorable environment for this bacteriosis. In addition, some authors report that in the open field, black plastic mulch and soil fumigation influence favorably the disease.

No tomato varieties currently
marketed are resistant to black marrow . It should be noted that this plant appears to be much more susceptible to this bacteriosis than some wild species of Lycopersicon . Thus, L. hirsutum, L. hirsutum f. sp. glabratum, L. cheesmanii, and Lycopersicon cerasiforme were found to be resistant to two strains of P. corrugata , unlike tomato.

* Chemical control : As the number of pesticides available for a given use is constantly changing, we advise you to always confirm your choice by consulting the e-phy site of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries which is an online catalog of plant protection products and their uses, fertilizers and growing media approved in France. This also applies to all biological products based on microorganisms or natural substances.
