Lightning

After a storm, producers can sometimes observe in their tomato plots symptoms caused by lightning ( lightning ): large outbreaks of plants that have withered suddenly and are subsequently dried and then necrotic.

The stems of these plants are also affected and occasionally show surface brown changes. The pith may remain white or turn slightly brown when it remains inside the stem. Frequently, it retracts more or less and takes on the appearance of several stacked discs (Figure 1) .

Plants in the center of the affected area are frequently more affected than plants in the periphery, some of them are sometimes completely desiccated.
