The Portulaceae family includes dicotyledonous, herbaceous, perennial or annual plants, generally hairy and fleshy, with whole simple leaves, with solitary flowers or in clusters, from temperate to sub-tropical regions, mainly present in America and southern Africa. Among the different genera, mention may be made of the genus Portulaca , with purslane ( Portulaca oleracea ) (market-garden purslane or porcelane) eaten as a salad or used as an ornamental or in herbal medicine.
