Meloidogyne spp. Goeldi

Root-knot nematodes

,
- classification : Animalia, Nematoda, Secernentea, Tylenchida, Heteroderidae

Meloidogyne spp. (root-knot nematodes) are spread worldwide affecting more than 3000 plants. Several species occur on tobacco. Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White, 1919) and Meloidogyne javanica (Treub, 1885) are the most widespread and the most damaging. The latter is more tolerant to drought and high temperatures. They are found almost in every tobacco producing country in the world. In most countries they are considered as major factors limiting the production of tobacco crops. Two other species, Meloidogyne arenaria (Neal, 1889) and Meloidogyne hapla (Chitwood, 1949) have a more limited distribution and cause less damage. These species are reported mainly in South Africa, the United States, in some countries in Oceania and Europe. M. hapla is rather located in cold regions, it is found especially in Canada.

In France, the damage caused by root-knot nematodes is only occasionally serious. It has been  observed mainly in a few tobacco fields in Southwest. The species causing the damage might be M. incognita and M. arenaria.

Other species of Meloidogyne have been reported in tobacco literature, but their distribution and impact are very limited.
