Microdochium panattonianum is a fungus that has been reported in many countries on several continents (USA, Australia, New Zealand) and in Europe (Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Serbia). It is found in both temperate and subtropical production areas . Under certain particularly favorable conditions, it can cause considerable damage both in cultivation and after harvest, as well as during storage and transport. It affects cultivated and wild lettuce, chicory and endive.

It has been known in France for many years, but its incidence has often been relatively limited. Anthracnose seems to have been on the rise since the early 1990s, especially on lettuce, more occasionally on chicory. It is currently a more frequent disease that is found especially in field crops grown in the fall. It is not uncommon to observe it now in damp shelters during winter.
