Thielaviopsis basicola is a fungus present in many countries of the world and attacks mainly endive . It is very rarely reported on lettuce, mainly in the USA and Australia. In the United States, it has not been considered a pathogenic fungus of lettuce. In Australia, it was first reported in the early 1990s in Queensland. In this state, it was also rife with tobacco, Lathyrus odoratus and Lupinus angustifolius . Several hectares of lettuce had to be turned over due to poor plant growth (Figure 1).

In France , we observed damage from Thielaviopsis basicola only once, on curly chicory cultivated in the Pyrénées-Orientales during the fall of 2000.
