Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum is a globally widespread bacterium (Gram - bacillus) which attacks various vegetables in particular. It is reported in many countries where salad is grown (Japan, USA, Hawaii, many European countries ...), on lettuce, chicory leaves and endive. It can cause serious damage both in the field and under cover (in soil and above ground), during transport and storage.

In France, the incidence of this bacterium is relatively low. Rather, it rages sporadically.

Another species, such as Dickeya chrysanthemi (anc. Erwinia chrysanthemi ), is reported on lettuce in Japan and Swaziland.
