Golovinomyces cichoracearum var. cichoracearum is the fungus responsible for powdery mildew in salad.

Powdery mildew is considered on lettuce (lettuce, curly endives and escaroles) as a secondary disease in almost all of the countries where it occurs. It is reported in several states of the USA, Canada, Korea, Japan, various European countries (Switzerland, Great Britain, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Greece ...) and in the Mediterranean basin ( Israel...). Its damage is rarely significant and it manifests itself both in the open field and under cover.

We find the same situation in France , where powdery mildew is often sporadic and considered an anecdotal disease which lowers the quality of salads, only occasionally causing serious damage. It occurs especially on chicory, more rarely on lettuce. On the latter, its attacks on the seed carriers pose some problems for seed production.

* , Another powdery mildew Podosphaera fusca (Fr.) U. Braun & Shishkoff 2000 (syn. Sphaerotheca fusca Braun, 1987; Shin, 2000), was reported on lettuce in 2006 in Korea. It should be noted that this species has already been reported occasionally on various species of wild Lactuca in several countries in North America, Europe and Asia.
