Convolvulaceae

The Convolvulaceae family includes herbaceous dicotyledonous plants, mostly climbing or creeping, shrubs, lianas and sometimes trees from temperate to tropical regions. In the genus Ipomoea we find the sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas ), a perennial brown plant very widespread in the tropical and subtropical regions where it is grown for its edible tubers. Both the tubers and the leaves are a staple food in the tropics where the sweet potato takes the place of the potato.
