Control measures
The measures designed to control PMTV consist primarily of preventing the introduction and development of its vector, Spongospora subterranea f.sp. subterranea, the powdery scab.
The use of resistant cultivars is important for high risk areas but otherwise control consists mainly of taking the following measures:
- use of healthy and certified seed potatoes;
- planting in fields free from powdery scab; avoiding compacted or wet areas;
- controlling the excess of water resulting from over-irrigation or inadequate drainage;
- early roguing to eliminate any weak or suspected plants and the control of volunteers.
