Ink disease

Chestnut ink disease is mainly caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi and P. cambivora (see page “Biology of Phytophthora”).

Those two pathogens infect the roots of the chestnut trees and cause different symptoms : root necrosis, necrosis of stems and trunks and/or generalized dieaback (see page “Symptoms”).

Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to eradicate chestnut ink disease once the trees are affected. It is therefore necessary to use preventive methods to avoid its introduction and to reduce its impact in contaminated plots of resistant rootstocks (see page "Chestnut ink disease management").
