Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Jones 1901) Hauben et al. (1999)

Bacterial rot

- classification : Bacteria, Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Enterobacteriales, Enterobacteriaceae
- synonyme : Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora (Jones 1901) Bergey et al. 1923
- English names : bacterial stem rot and fruit rot

Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum , in bacterial cells and rod-shaped Gram -, is universally widespread and addresses a wide range of plant s , including various vegetables. Its presence has been reported in a few zucchini and squash production areas, in particular in the United States, Mexico, Japan, China, Europe (in Poland and Italy in particular). In humid and rather hot climatic conditions, this bacterium causes wet rots on stems and / or fruits, both in the field and under cover, and during the transport of the fruits and during their storage.

In France , the incidence of this bacterium is quite limited. It rages sporadically, affecting mainly the stems of zucchini plants under shelter and sometimes the fruits.

On the other bacteria long associated with gender Erwinia are reported occasionally on zucchini and squash:  Dickeya chrysanthemi (Burkholder et al. ) Samson et al. ( Pectobacterium chrysanthemi [Burkholder et al. ] Brenner et al. , E. chrysanthemi Burkholder et al. ) Mainly affecting the stems or the fruits; Erwinia tracheiphila (Smith) Bergey et al. responsible for bacterial wilting of Cucurbitaceae. To our knowledge, this bacterium does not seem to be rampant in France.
