Protection methods

There is no curative control method that can effectively control the alfalfa ( mosaic virus Alfalfa mosaic virus , AMV) during cultivation: an infected plant will remain so throughout its life.

We advise you to consult the “Protection methods” section of the sheet dealing with CMV . Indeed, the measures to control viruses transmitted by aphids are the same, regardless of the virus. We will only report here information concerning resistance to AMV.

Some varieties tomato and different wild species of Lycopersicon have been shown be to resistant to AMV : L. hirsutum ( form typicum , 'LA 1777'), L. hirsutum ( form glabratum , 'PI 134 417'). The study of the inheritance of resistance to AMV in 'PI 134 417' has shown that it is determined by a dominant gene " Am ". In L. hirsutum , it would be located on the T6 chromosome, and would confer total resistance.
