Verticillium dahliae Kleb. (1913)

Verticillium wilt

- Classification : Fungi, Ascomycota, Sordariomycetes, Hypocreomycetidae, Incertae sedis, Plectosphaerellaceae

Another Verticillium, V. albo-atrum Reinke & Berthold (1879) was isolated on tobacco in New Zealand; this species seems to be less damaging.

Verticillium dahliae (a very polyphagous vascular fungus) is present in many countries. It is not considered as a serious pathogen on tobacco, except in New Zealand and more recently in Chile. It has been reported in South America, USA, Canada and Africa; in these countries, it has practically no impact on yield.

In France disease occurrence is low, especially at harvest time. It is found in some production areas, particularly in the north of France, and in the Southwest. It can occasionally be severe and affect the quality of harvested Virginia tobacco leaves.

Symptoms of this disease are not well-known or they are confused with other phytosanitary problems and that is why it may go unnoticed.
